Panel Discussion: Canadian Economic Outlook Update
With the current Canadian economic landscape characterized by falling oil prices and a lower Canadian dollar, the annual panel discussion promises to be engaging by focusing on an in-depth analysis of the current key economic drivers including a discussion of global factors which will affect these near term forecasts.
Moderator: Vic Kariappa, Managing Director, Government, Crown Corporations, Insurance and Financial Markets, RBC/Royal Bank.
Vic Kariappa is responsible for the relationship teams managing RBC Financial Group’s business and strategy with the Government of Canada including its departments, agencies and crown corporations.
He also has responsibility for the RBC team looking after Insurance and Financial Service Enterprises across Canada with respect to their Treasury and Cash Management requirements.
Mr. Kariappa joined Royal Bank in Winnipeg in 1986 following his graduation from the University of Manitoba where he obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration. He also has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Calgary. He has been a part-time sessional instructor at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business and an active member of the Association of Financial Professionals and Treasury Management Association of Canada.

Aron Gampel, Vice-President and Deputy Chief Economist, Scotiabank
Aron Gampel is the Vice-President and Deputy Chief Economist of Scotiabank. Aron is a senior advisor to the Bank’s executive management, and has wide-ranging responsibilities within the organization, including presenting to Scotiabank’s diverse customer base internationally. He is also a featured Bank spokesperson through a variety of media channels.
Prior to joining Scotiabank in 1984, Aron spent six years as an economist with the Canadian investment firm of Pitfield Mackay Ross Ltd., and four years with the Ontario Economic Council, both in Toronto. For the past ten years, he has been a Director of the Canadian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and currently is the Chair of its Audit Committee.
Aron is a graduate of York University in Toronto, Ontario, where he received his Master of Arts degree in Economics. He also earned his Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Computer Science from Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Ian Lee, Assistant Professor in the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University
Ian Lee has been an Assistant Professor in the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University since 1988 where he teaches and researches business strategy and public policy.
Mr. Lee has published extensively in the How Ottawa Spends (McGill-Queens Press), concerning the PBO, government downsizing, public service reforms, corporate income tax debate. He has taught EMBA courses over 100 times in developing countries around the world since 1990 and published approximately 45 Op-eds including several in the Globe and Mail, Financial Post and National Post concerning pension readiness. Mr. Lee is a regular analyst weekly on CBC The Exchange and has been a frequent contributor to CBC Power & Politics, CBC Radio (Syndication), Global TV The West Block, CTV News Channel, BNN.
