Canada's future economic landscape is expected to be influenced by central bank rate policy, a vulnerable housing market and challenges to key trade corridors. Our annual and highly popular economic panel exchange promises to be engaging by focusing on an in-depth analysis of the current key economic drivers including a discussion of global factors which will affect near term forecasts.

Managing DirectorGovernment, Crown Corporations, Insurance and Financial Markets, RBC/Royal Bank.

Vic Kariappa is responsible for managing RBC Financial Group’s business and strategy with the Government of Canada, its departments, agencies and crown corporations as well as relationship responsibilities for large corporations considered to be government corporate interests and other entities that are arm’s length from the Federal Government, but created through legislation.

Mr. Kariappa has responsibility for the RBC team looking after Provincial Government Relationships, Insurance and Financial Service enterprises across Canada/Globally with respect to their Treasury and Cash Management requirements.

During his career with the Bank, Vic Kariappa has worked in corporate cash management and has had relationship management responsibilities for multinational oil and gas companies and diversified companies while working for the Bank in Calgary and Winnipeg.

Vic Kariappa moved to Ottawa in 1992 and took responsibility for an account portfolio involved in problem real estate accounts. In 1994, Mr. Kariappa joined the Federal Government and Crown Corporations group where he assumed his current position. In the fall of 2007, the Federal team was brought together with the Insurance and Financial Services team under his responsibility. The team now has a mandate for all public sector and insurance/financial services in Canada.

Vic Kariappa joined Royal Bank in Winnipeg in 1986 following his graduation from the University of Manitoba where he obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration. He also has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Calgary. Mr. Kariappa is a member of the Board of Directors of Water Aid Canada.

Michael Gregory, CFA

Deputy Chief Economist & Head of U.S. Economics/Managing Director, BMO Capital Markets

Michael Gregory manages the team responsible for forecasting and analyzing the North American economy and financial markets,

Michael began his career in economics with Royal Bank of Canada in Montreal in the mid-1980s, before moving to Toronto to work in RBC's foreign exchange and money market research group. He eventually moved along the yield curve and across the border, joining the fixed income strategy group at Lehman Brothers in New York City in the mid-1990s. Returning to Canada at the end of 2001, Michael headed up the Financial Services Analysis team at Bank of Montreal, focusing on regulatory and industry restructuring issues, prior to joining BMO Capital Markets Economics in 2004. He moved to Chicago in late 2013, providing research support for the U.S. and Canadian fixed income business and working with the Global Fixed Income Strategy team, before returning to Toronto last year.

Michael is a graduate of Concordia University and the University of Western Ontario. Michael also completed doctoral studies at Fordham University in New York City. He holds a Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Ian Lee

Associate Professor, Sprott School of Business, Carleton University

Ian Lee graduated with his PhD in Public Policy at Carleton University in 1989 and has been with the Sprott School of Business since 1987. Dr. Lee has taught and researched business strategy and public policy since 1988. His research interests are focused on the intersection of busines strategy and public policy including trade agreements, taxation, regulation, privatization, government deficits and specific sectors such as oil and gas.     

Ian Lee is a frequent analyst in the media including CBC's 'The Exchange' and 'Power & Politics', CBC Radio (Syndication), Global TV, CTV News Channel, BNN radio and print media. He has published approximately 45 Op-Eds including several in the Globe and Mail, New York Times, Financial Post and National Post.
