Global Payments Trends and Payments Modernization Case Studies
An overview of the key trends that are shaping the payments landscape in Canada, followed by focus around payments modernization. Global modernization case studies will be used to illustrate the opportunities and best practices than can be considered for Canada. The session will conclude with a view on the impacts and opportunities in the government and public sector payments space as it relates to payments modernization in Canada.

Soumak Chatterjee
Senior Manager, Deloitte
Soumak is a Senior Manager within Deloitte’s Financial Services practice in Toronto and leads the firm’s Canadian payments and blockchain practice. He has over a decade of consulting experience assisting clients drive business value through new disruptive products, services and partnerships leveraging his deep expertise at the intersection of innovation, business and technology from strategy to execution. Soumak’s experience in payments spans credit cards, debit/Interac, prepaid, e/m-commerce, P2P transfers, mobile payments, transit payments and cross-border FX money movement. He has experience driving projects and relationships across the Canadian payments ecosystem with issuers, acquirers, processors, mobile wallet providers and transit organizations supporting business/technology strategy formulation, new product development; technology architecture, operating model definition, and program execution.
Soumak also leads Deloitte’s Blockchain team, a group of specialists engaged in assisting clients understand and apply distributed ledger technology concepts to their business models, technology infrastructure and operating processes. He co-leads Deloitte’s “Disruptive Innovation in Financial Services” project team with the World Economic Forum (WEF) and is a published author with the Forum on the topic of Blockchain.
Mr. Chatterjee holds an M.B.A (Bergman Scholar) from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
Vivek Ramasubramanian
Senior Manager, Deloitte
Vivek is a Senior Manager in Deloitte’s Consulting practice and co-leads the Payments Practice. He is intimately familiar with Canadian payment systems and standards, as well as emerging payment trends and practices.
He has over 10 years of industry and consulting experience in financial services, having delivered banking projects that included payments, cards, and retail banking for clients in North America, Europe, Middle East and Asia. Vivek has worked extensively with a wide range of players in the payments space across large banks, payments regulators, and FinTechs, focusing on strategy development, roadmap planning & formulation, business casing and financial analysis, solution architecture and design, and large transformations.
Mr. Ramasubramanian holds an MBA from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, and an undergraduate degree in Engineering.
