Money Creation - The Role of the Bank of Canada and Canadian Chartered Banks

This presentation will go over Banking operations at the Bank, how money appears and flows through the financial system leveraging market operations and balance sheet movements, as well as the interdependencies with cash management, the payment system and liquidity risk management. Financial requirements impact balance sheet tools available to the Bank of Canada and Banks. The money movement further impacts economic decision and financial stability.

Keynote Speaker:

Danika Cheff, Senior Manager, Funds Management and Banking Department

Danika Cheff joined the Bank of Canada in April 2011. First in Financial Services where she led the Bank’s internal control over the financial reporting program. She also led the financial reporting for the Bank and was a subject matter expert on complex accounting research. She held this position until beginning in Banking Operations in February 2017. In this role, she was the senior operation specialist responsible for key initiatives impacting the Bank’s payment and settlement activities.

Ms. Cheff brings to her current role as Senior Manager in the Funds Management and Banking Department, more than 13 years of experience in financial, operational and business advisory services, in both the public and private sectors. Prior to joining the Bank of Canada, she was a Controller for a television production company, and before then she was at a publicly traded mining company, as well as at Deloitte where she provided audit and advisory services.

Ms. Cheff received an Honours Bachelor of Commerce Degree, with specialization in Accounting from the University of Ottawa. She holds a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant designation. She also completed a Master of Economics qualifying program and a Master of Economics Degree from the University of Ottawa.
