Topic:  “Canadian Economic Outlook Update”

With the current Canadian economic landscape characterized by falling oil prices and a lower Canadian dollar, this timely panel discussion promises to be engaging by focusing on an in-depth analysis of the current key economic drivers including a discussion of global factors which will affect these near term forecasts.

Panel Participants:

Derek Burleton, Vice President & Deputy Chief Economist for TD Bank Group

Mr. Burleton leads a team of economists which provides leading analysis on the Canadian economy and financial markets. Each year, he travels extensively across Canada, speaking at more than 50 events on economic and financial developments. As a respected commentator, Mr. Burleton has been quoted in many media outlets – including the Globe and Mail, Financial Times and the Economist. He maintains a strong interest in Canadian public policy issues, and has written substantive reports on health care sustainability, education and immigration reform. Mr. Burleton participates in a number of advisory and steering committees both internal and external to TD Bank Group and currently serves on the Board of the Toronto Association of Business Economists (TABE). Derek Burleton received his Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University and an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics. Mr. Burleton has fifteen years of experience as an economist in the financial industry.

Ian Lee, Professor in the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University

Ian Lee completed his PhD in Public Policy at Carleton University in 1989. Prior to returning to graduate school, he was employed for almost 10 years in the financial services and banking sector. Mr. Lee taught in American and Canadian EMBA programs in countries across Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union and subsequently multiple times in China, Cuba and Iran. He has published multiple articles in the Carleton University annual publication ‘How Ottawa Spends’ (McGill Queens Press) on the Public Service, corporate income taxes and downsizing. Mr. Lee has published over 40 Op-Eds including five in the Globe and Mail in 2014 concerning pensions and income inequality.  He has appeared multiple times before House of Commons and Senate Committees and has been in every Federal Budget Lockup since 2008. Ian Lee attended a pre-budget consultation by the Minister of Finance in 2009 and 2010 and the annual retreat of the Minister of Finance in 2011 at Wakefield, Quebec.
