Payments System Modernization: An Update From The Canadian Payments Association

Countries around the globe continue to examine and enhance their national payments systems in order to better service the needs of users (i.e. Government, Corporates, SMEs, and Consumers). Canada, led by the Canadian Payments Association, has recently undertaken an extensive outreach initiative to better understand the gaps and opportunities that exist within Canada’s payments ecosystem.

The CPA leveraging these findings along with the CPA’s global environmental scan of payments systems; research of “core” payments system attributes and their associated trade-offs; and feedback from CPA members and the Stakeholder Advisory Council will define a roadmap for modernizing the CPA’s national payments system. This multi-year, multi-phase program has only recently begun but will affect change in the ecosystem to better meet the emerging needs of its participants and users.

Keynote Speaker:

Doug Kreviazuk

Vice President, Next Generation Clearing & Settlement, Canadian Payments Association

Doug Kreviazuk is the Vice-President of Next Generation Clearing and Settlement. He joined the CPA in 1997 following an extensive career with the Ontario and Federal governments. He is responsible for the study, planning and development of Canada’s next generation core national clearing and settlement system.

For the previous 17 years, Mr. Kreviazuk was VP Policy, Research and Public Affairs for the CPA. In his current capacity, Mr. Kreviazuk works closely with government, Bank of Canada, member institutions and other payment system users to better understand and assess the needs and impacts of technology on payment systems.

Mr. Kreviazuk is the past Chair and Board Director of the NACHA Global Payments Forum, as well as a member of the International Clearing Payments Association of Chief Executive Officers (ICPACE).
