Panel Discussion: Canadian Economic Outlook Update
Canada's current economic landscape is characterized by variation in performance of its regional economies, a vulnerable housing market, lower Canadian dollar, uncertainty resulting from recent domestic and international shocks, and challenges to key trade corridors. The annual economic panel discussion promises to be engaging by focusing on an in-depth analysis of the current key economic drivers including a discussion of global factors which will affect near term forecasts.
Moderator: Vic Kariappa, Managing Director, Government, Crown Corporations, Insurance and Financial Markets, RBC/Royal Bank.
Vic Kariappa is responsible for managing RBC Financial Group’s business and strategy with the Government of Canada, its departments, agencies and crown corporations as well as relationship responsibilities for large corporations considered to be government corporate interests and other entities that are arm’s length from the Federal Government but created through legislation. He also oversees Provincial Government relationships and their related crown entities.
Mr. Kariappa has responsibility for the RBC team looking after Insurance and Financial Service enterprises across Canada with respect to their Treasury and Cash Management requirements.
Mr. Kariappa joined Royal Bank in Winnipeg in 1986 following his graduation from the University of Manitoba where he obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration. He also has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Calgary. Mr. Kariappa is a member of the Board of Directors of Water Aid Canada.

Brett House, Vice-President and Deputy Chief Economist, Scotiabank
Brett House is Vice-President and Deputy Chief Economist at Scotiabank. He works with the Chief Economist to manage a research team that provides Scotiabank and its clients with leading economic insights and forecasts across the bank’s domestic and international business lines.
Prior to joining Scotiabank in October 2016, Brett was Chief Economist at Alignvest Investment Management in Toronto and Global Strategist at Woodbine Capital Advisors, a New York-based global macro fund. Earlier in his career, Brett served as Principal Advisor in the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General and as an Economist at the International Monetary Fund. He also gained experience in financial markets at Goldman Sachs International in London and at the World Bank in Washington, DC.
Brett is a Rhodes Scholar with degrees in economics from the University of Oxford and Queen’s University at Kingston. In addition, he has taught at Oxford and McGill University in Montréal, and has held research roles at Columbia University in New York and Massey College at the University of Toronto.
Brett sits on the investment committees of Pearson College and the Canadian Rhodes Scholars’ Foundation. He received the 2014 Québec Notable Award in Finance.
Ian Lee, Associate Professor in the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University
Ian Lee graduated with his PhD in Public Policy at Carleton University in 1989 focusing on deregulation and privatization in Canada and the U.K. Prior to his PhD studies, Dr. Lee was employed for 10 years in the financial services sector.
Ian Lee has been with the Sprott School of Business since 1988 and teaches strategic management and international business strategy. Dr. Lee was the founding MBA Director in the Sprott School from 2007-10. He was the director of the Bachelor of International Business in the Sprott School from 1996-98.
Ian Lee is a frequent analyst in the media including CBC's 'On the Money' and 'Power & Politics', CBC Radio (Syndication), Global TV, CTV News Channel, BNN radio and print media. He has published approximately 45 Op-Eds including several articles in the Globe and Mail, New York Times, Financial Post and National Post.
